The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Power BI Adoption Roadmap

Successfully adopting business intelligence and analytics tools isn’t easy. Power BI provides a broad range of features and capabilities for preparing, modeling, visualizing and sharing data, but the value an organization gets from Power BI is a function of people and processes, and not only the tools and technology.

In July 2021, Microsoft published the Power BI Adoption Roadmap. This roadmap is a collection of best practices guidance for organizations seeking to get from where they are today to where they want to be tomorrow, and to get more value from their data and their investment in Power BI. The Adoption Roadmap is freely available to everyone… but not everyone may be ready to start their journey without a guide.

In this full-day pre-conference session, Matthew Roche of the Power BI Customer Advisory Team at Microsoft serves as that guide, providing an end-to-end tour of its guidance on topics including data governance, system oversight, content management and delivery, building a center of excellence and a community of practice… all with the end goal of helping YOUR organization get more value from your data by using Power BI in the best ways. One day isn’t enough time to cover the entire roadmap in detail, so Matthew will focus on the most important topics where awareness and investment can make the biggest difference.

Join this training day to learn how to unlock the full potential of Power BI using source control and CI/CD practices within your organization, maximize your team’s efficiency and take your current development practices to the NEXT STEP!

You will learn and practice all the necessary basics around Power BI source control and CI/CD and the necessary steps to implement those in your team.

The session covers source control basics and explains the use of git, Visual Studio Code and Azure DevOps in conjunction with Power BI. Advanced DAX

If you already know and use the DAX but want to move to the next level, this workshop is for you.

Unleash the full power of evaluation context manipulation, learn about expanded tables, control the data lineage, avoid circular dependencies, and manage relationships at different granularities.

The prerequisite to attend this training is good experience writing DAX measures in Power BI or Analysis Services. You must know row context, filter context, and context transition. You are comfortable with using CALCULATE. You are not afraid to learn something new. At the minimum, watch the free Introducing DAX Video Course and make weeks of practice before attending this training.

Here are a few examples of what you can learn in this workshop:

  • Filter columns, not tables. Yes, you already know that, but you will learn many more reasons why it is a good idea.
  • Understand when to use ALLEXCEPT, and what to use instead of ALLEXCEPT all the many times when ALLEXCEPT is not a good idea.
  • Fix the circular dependency error that might appear when you create a relationship, a calculated column, or a table.
  • Control data lineage and play with it by using TREATAS.
  • Write granularity-aware measures when you use many-to-many cardinality relationships (yes, you can if you know what you are doing).
